Neighborhood Snapshot #8 – Printers Row

Author- Elise Lovell, Program Director (Elise.Lovell@aah.org, @Elise_Lovell)

Enjoy classic Chicago architecture?  Sidewalk cafes?  Proximity to both the lake and the river?

Consider Printer’s Row.

In the 1880s, Printer’s Row was the Midwestern center for printing, with Dearborn Station as its anchor.  The printing and publishing businesses are gone, and the train station is a retail center with a yoga studio, but the neighborhood maintains its beautiful historic brick buildings as residential lofts.  And every June we still have a weekend book fair!  With several small local parks, it’s an oasis of leafy calm in the heart of Chicago.

Buckingham Fountain, Grant Park and the lake are just to the east, and the South Branch of the Chicago River is several blocks to the west.  We enjoy the restaurants and wine bar, the Saturday morning farmer’s market, and the connection of knowing and supporting our local merchants.

It’s all about the people.  Serving the patients of the diverse south side of Chicago is a privilege, and being part of this team of stellar residents, nurses, PharmDs, techs and faculty is a joy every shift.  Advocate Christ is known for our high volume, high acuity clinical environment, the 1:1 faculty member/resident clinical team model (no searching for an attending!), and an expectation of caring for critically ill patients, including performing invasive procedures, from day one.  We are a Level I Trauma Center, LVAD and Transplant Center, with a Pediatric hospital on campus.  Come for the acuity, stay for the camaraderie and mutual support, graduate prepared for anything!
