Neighborhood Snapshot #7 – the West Loop

Authors: Patsi Whiteside PGY1 and Emily Hoover PGY1

Do you consider yourself someone who enjoys beautiful city views? Someone who wants to live by water and park greenery? Or someone who needs to be only steps from Chicago’s most famous hamburger? Then West Loop is the spot for you!

Located just…WEST of the LOOP, this neighborhood has quickly become one of the most popular places to live and work. Over the past 15 years, West Loop transformed from an industrial manufacturing hub and meat packing district into a contemporary hotspot for restaurants, bars, and businesses. A stretch along Randolph Street known as “Restaurant Row” offers some of the best dining destinations in the city with small hidden gems to top rated tasting menus and everything in between.

Take a stroll along the famous Riverwalk to enjoy an after-shift (well-deserved) beer or jump in a kayak and experience the incredible Chicago architecture from the canal! It offers a neighborhood feel with all of the convenience of living downtown. And its location, adjacent to a major highway, allows for easy access to get to Christ (about a 30 minute drive), or to visit our co-residents all across the city!

For us, it was the energy of the emergency department that made Christ the easy choice for residency. Working here is electric. It’s not just because of the exciting pathology or the needs of the patient population. It’s an electricity made by the attendings who love to teach, the residents who are anxious to learn, and the nurses and techs and the rest of the support staff who make it all possible. People who choose to work at a high volume, high acuity emergency department like Christ are proud of where they work and this shows in every patient encounter. After experiencing the uniqueness of this place on interview day, it was hard to envision working anywhere else!  The first few months have been an amazing experience and we’re looking forward to the next three years!
